FIA expands global road safety drive into Middle East and Africa with new programme
Programme supports local authorities with training and data-led solutions
DUBAI – The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has announced the expansion of its flagship road safety initiative into the Middle East and Africa, marking a significant step in its global efforts to improve road safety outcomes.
The move comes amid growing concerns over traffic-related fatalities, particularly in developing regions where risks remain disproportionately high. The initiative aims to equip local stakeholders with the tools and expertise needed to implement sustainable safety measures.
The FIA Safe Mobility 4 All and 4 Life programme is designed to support authorities, mobility organisations and community partners through structured training, mentorship and evidence-based strategies. By focusing on practical, data-driven interventions, the programme seeks to translate global expertise into tangible improvements on the ground.
Global push
The expansion follows the programme’s rollout across the Americas and Asia-Pacific, where it has already helped shape targeted safety projects. By extending its reach to the Middle East and Africa, the FIA is strengthening its commitment to addressing road safety challenges on a global scale.
According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The African region continues to record the highest road traffic fatality rates globally, while countries across the Middle East and North Africa face ongoing and complex safety challenges. These include infrastructure gaps, rapid urbanisation and inconsistent enforcement of traffic regulations.
Regional focus
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, described the expansion as a decisive milestone in advancing safer mobility worldwide. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving long-term change, noting that partnerships play a crucial role in delivering effective and scalable solutions.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, alongside support from the FIA Foundation. Through this partnership, participating organisations will gain access to technical expertise, training modules and international networks aimed at strengthening their capacity to act.
Essa Hamza Alfailakawi, President of the FIA Region I MENA Mobility Council, underscored the importance of collective action across the region. He pointed to the need for stronger coordination between governments, mobility organisations and local stakeholders to address persistent safety challenges and develop more resilient transport systems.
Collaborative effort
In Africa, the urgency of the issue remains particularly acute. Jinaro Kibet, President of FIA Region I ACTA, described road safety as one of the continent’s most pressing public health concerns. He emphasised that initiatives such as Safe Mobility 4 All and 4 Life are essential in enabling local organisations to implement practical, life-saving measures tailored to their communities.
Founded in 1904, the FIA operates as a non-profit federation representing 245 member organisations across five continents. With offices in Paris, London and Geneva, it plays a central role in promoting safety, sustainability and innovation across both motor sport and everyday mobility.
